Making frit the hard way

2015-02-03T17:51:10-08:00

So I picked up a bunch of glass today, full- and half-sized sheets, neatly wrapped. Set them upright on the backseat like you're supposed to, then thought, "I don't need to seatbelt them in, I'm only driving home." So of course you know what happened, right? Guy in the lefthand lane decides he needs to make an immediate right turn, [...]

I don’t light up my life, it seems

2016-05-16T01:01:59-07:00

So I haven't made ANY glass, or molds, or models, or pretty much anything relating to glass for at least three weeks. I wonder if you can get the glass DTs?

Making light of glass

2015-02-03T17:59:40-08:00

A very prominent glass sculptor once told me she's noticed that as she gets older her glass sculptures are getting smaller and smaller. "By the time I'm 65 I'll be down to making pendants," she snorted.

Kilned out. Drat.

2016-05-17T18:25:03-07:00

So with a humungous glass sculpture inside, my little Skutt GM1414 decides to pull a fast one. Or rather a slow one...

Stacks bowl update

2016-05-17T18:41:30-07:00

The grey tweed effect was SUPPOSED to be pure French Vanilla, punctuated by small transparent lines of intense color. Instead, I got a motley assortment of greys and lavenders mixed with French Vanilla.

Reactivities

2020-06-21T13:37:31-07:00

Molten glass will respond to minute changes in temperature (that's how glassblowing works), to the atmosphere and to the presence of other substances. That’s why melting glass together doesn’t always deliver the same color as stacking the glasses cold. Red plus white may just equal black.

One problem with being addicted to creating glass art is that it's not exactly a compact hobby. Coldworking equipment (grinders, laps, rociprolaps, saws, etc) take up considerable space and create a lot of mess, kilns also require some space, and you need somewhere to store extra sheet and frit glass, molds, mold-making materials and supplies, kiln furniture, tubs of abrasive [...]

Mess. Mess. Mess.

2015-04-11T17:35:06-07:00

I work with some noxious substances--it's just what you do when you cast glass--and I take every precaution to (a) not incorporate the stuff into my body (b) not wind up wearing it and ruining yet another outfit, and (c) not get it all over everything so I don't have to spend hours getting it off the kitchen counter or [...]

Rubber cement is a solvent (duh)

2016-05-14T22:25:50-07:00

Apparently the way you get rubber cement is by dissolving rubber in a solvent. Paint this concoction on something, and you get a permanently sticky bond with...whatever. (Want details? Check out the e-Encyclopedia entry.) This is relevant because the logical extension of having a solvent in rubber cement somehow escaped me. I wanted to layer things onto an organically curved, [...]
